Student Health Insurance

Whether you’re a new or continuing student at Biola, health insurance is an essential step to enrollment. We’re here to help guide you through the process and answer any questions you have.
Insurance Requirements
Who is required to have health insurance?
- All traditional undergraduate students regardless of credit load
- All international students on an F-1 visa (undergrad/grad/doctoral)
- All students living in Biola housing (undergrad/grad/doctoral)
- All Rosemead School of Psychology students (undergrad/grad/doctoral)
- Master of Arts in Marriage and Family Therapy (MFT) students within the Talbot School of Theology
Note: Students who do not fall under one of these categories and are therefore not required to have health insurance are not eligible to purchase insurance through the SHIP at Biola. Please explore or to help you find other options for health insurance coverage.
Students who meet one or more of these criteria are given a Health Insurance Task in during registration and will be:
Auto-enrolled in the Student Health Insurance Plan (SHIP). To stay enrolled in SHIP, no further action is required.
Automatically billed to their student account. To view the SHIP rates, explore the Health Insurance Rates and Waiver Deadlines section.
Once a student is auto-enrolled, SHIP will be listed as their primary insurance even if they have other coverage. All office visits, prescriptions and related services will be billed to and paid by SHIP.
How do I opt out of SHIP?
- To opt out of SHIP, a waiver can be submitted through Gallagher, with proof of other health insurance coverage.
- The insurance must meet the requirements for insurance waiver (see guidelines below).
- No claims must have been submitted to or paid by SHIP on the student's behalf during the semester.
- The waiver must be submitted and approved before the waiver deadline. After the waiver deadline, no insurance changes can be made for that semester.
- Students who submit an approved waiver for fall semester do not need to resubmit a waiver for spring semester unless their insurance coverage changes.
- During spring’s open enrollment period, students also have the option to rescind their fall waiver if they wish to enroll in SHIP for spring semester.
